About Ella Blackwood

Your life was meant to be enjoyed.

Most of us have been told that life is only valuable if it’s hard, sacrificial, and very very loooonng-suffering. But my own pleasure has brought me more integrity, presence, and capacity to nurture what I love. Life is short and your dreams are too good to waste. I want you to stop chasing others’ criteria for life because ultimately your life of pleasure also makes a better world for all of us.

01Why this work

Pleasure is a path of breadcrumbs to what we most want to do with our lives and how we can do it. When we reject pleasure, we miss out on more than just some good feels—we lose the thread of why we are alive at all.

02Fresh Start

It didn’t feel right.

A figure with dark hair in a bun kneels on a white rug, facing a botanical mural with a yellow sun motif, surrounded by tropical plants in a sunlit interior.

In my early 30s, I realized that the way I had been living did not make me feel alive. I had done all the “right” things according to my community, but it wasn’t working. Shouldn’t I be happy?

My efforts to make the “right” decisions meant I had skipped all the clues as to what happiness really meant to me and my body. I was waiting for someone else’s criteria to water the parched garden of my life.

Hawaii led me back to those proverbial waters. In Hawaii, I reconnected with pleasure in a new way, as both a sensory enjoyment and a deep steadiness within myself. It wasn’t just food or beautiful scenery (although those are in the mix too!). It was cafés, flowers, hosting, watercolors, movies, silence, and many other things too.

Pleasure is vulnerable.

Pleasure is vulnerable and exposing. It shapes who we think we are, what we feel allowed to do, and who we allow ourselves to love. Culturally we are told pleasure is cheap and easy, that it can’t be trusted, that it is a gateway to sin or betrayal, or that it demands luxury price tags and grueling work. Neither has to be true.

Pleasure is dynamic, a free gift, and our birthright. Most of us shut down our unique invitations into pleasure and call that virtue or maturity. The result is epidemic levels of loneliness, overwork, despair, and apathy towards the destruction of our world. But the way out is right there, beckoning us all the time. Slow down, listen fully, tiptoe deeper, and we will find it again: a life of integrity, of creativity, of delight, rich in purpose and belonging, unique to us. That is a life of pleasure.
